Wow! It doesn't
get any better than this. Summer steelhead caught by
Pete Machek on the San Juan River on this beautiful
August day. This fish came to a #12 dry muddler minnow
tied in black ribbed in gold. Fished on a 12 ft leader
and a double tapered dry line. Pete was waking the fly
very slowly across the pool. The fish missed the first
presentation and as luck had it the second presentation,
which was slower than the first, allowed the fish to
take the fly and turn. Photo taken by Bill McMillian.
A classic shot to remember such a beautiful day.
From the dry-fly purist
to the beginner the rivers of Port Renfrew have it all!
Port Renfrew has true summer-run Steelhead. These fish

August, September and October.
Port Renfrew is not only
big on summer steelheading but ok get ready..... WINTER
STEELHEADING too!!! We have what you would call the
BEST KEPT SECRET OF ALL TIME!!! Winter Steelheading
is a Steelheader's dream come true here at Port Renfrew.
Just think of it. A comfortable place to relax and unwind
after a spectacular day on one of our 5 pristine wilderness
rivers.
Historically speaking, the
San Juan River, contained some of the largest winter
run fish in BC. In the 50's and 60's numerous fish up
to and including 30 pounds were taken by drift fishermen;
many coming from Washington and Oregon for the pristine
beauty of the area and these large fish.
